The Abandon Harris Campaign announces that an academic letter calling on Americans to vote third party in the upcoming election is quickly gaining traction across higher education institutions nationwide. Titled “A Call by American Academics to Vote Against Genocide on November 5, 2024: Vote to Abandon Harris – Vote Third Party,” the principled letter condemns the Biden-Harris administration’s support for Israel’s actions in Gaza and urges voters to hold Kamala Harris accountable at the ballot box. The University of Michigan has become the focal point for this movement, with the letter circulating widely. This reflects a year of mounting frustration within the university, where the Faculty Senate was among the first in the nation to endorse a BDS resolution. However, the university administration, led by President Santa J. Ono, has failed to address the harassment, violence, and threats reported by its Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim constituents. This neglect has sparked a strong response from the campus community and mirrors sentiments on campuses nationwide.
On October 7, the Abandon Harris Campaign endorsed Jill Stein for president and has now issued 1,200 additional invitations to faculty at over 60 universities, expanding the letter’s reach as momentum continues to grow. Regular updates will follow as this movement amplifies, bringing together voices from American academics, Imams, Black Muslim leaders, and beyond. Even for those who may not support Stein, the Abandon Harris Campaign urges voters to consider third-party candidates rather than abstaining from voting.
One signatory captured the urgency of this movement, stating, “Gaza has exposed the tortured soul of American democracy. As Democrat George Wallace once infamously said, the Biden-Harris administration’s policies on Palestine now eerily echo: ‘Zionism now, Zionism tomorrow, Zionism forever’—no matter the cost, no matter the carnage. On November 5, I’m voting third party to hold Kamala Harris accountable for this administration’s madness.”
