(September 9, 2024)
On September 6th, American citizen Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was executed by an IDF sniper—shot in the head as she courageously stood to protect Palestinians protesting against illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Just days earlier, she had traveled to Palestine with the sole mission of defending Palestinian farmers from the brutal and unchecked violence of Israeli settlers and the Israeli state. Her life was taken in cold blood.
Three months ago, Eygi graduated from the University of Washington, where she was a fierce organizer against genocide, leading protests and encampments. She was the embodiment of bravery, fighting for the oppressed and standing up to those in power without hesitation. Now, she is gone.
An American citizen was murdered by a so-called ally of the United States—a foreign military that is drenched in U.S. taxpayer money, bolstered by billions in military aid, and shielded by U.S. political protections. She was almost certainly killed with a weapon bought and made in the U.S. And what have we heard from the leaders of this nation? Not a word. Not from President Joe Biden. Not from Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for the presidency.
Instead, just yesterday—two days after Eygi’s murder—the Harris campaign released a new policy page, reaffirming that “Harris will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself and she will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself.” That “ability to defend itself” seems to also include killing U.S. citizens like Aysenur Eygi, alongside the many Palestinians whose lives have been taken in this brutal occupation. This administration’s silence is as damning as it is enraging.
We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the cold-blooded murder of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, one of far too many Americans slaughtered by the Israeli military—a military that has never faced a single consequence for the murder of either Americans or Palestinians. We condemn the complicity of the Biden-Harris administration and the Democratic Party in this murder. Providing billions of dollars, giving free rein for war crimes, and turning a blind eye to atrocities isn’t just a policy choice—it’s direct, hands-on participation in genocide.
How dare this administration remain silent as one of their own citizens is gunned down by a foreign military? How can Biden and Harris be trusted to protect the lives of Americans here at home when they can’t even muster the basic humanity to speak out about the murder of an American abroad, killed by their own ally?
This is beyond shameful. This is betrayal.
